I am just about to finish "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. I do not want it to end, but I don't want to stop reading it. Ah, The continuos struggle of reading.
The book was 10 RMB, so I bought it just because it looked somewhat interesting. It was a great decision to bring it on my Bali trip.
I Love It. Yup. Simple as that.
I was immediately captivated by the fact that it is all written through letters and telegrams between each character. An idea so smart, interesting and creative that I wish I had thought of it first. After reading probably 3 letters, I had already fallen in love with the main character Juliet. Without even knowing what the story was about, I was hooked. That's the best kind of book.
As I kept reading, I found it was a historical non-fiction novel about World War 2, London and the surrounding area, mostly Guernsey (which makes sense for the title). I have learned so much about that time period already, I feel quite educated. It does not feel like a history book though because I discover the information with so much emotional pull right alongside Juliet.
Perhaps I also love it because, at its core, it is about reading. How it brings people together, educates, excites, and all the other amazing things reading does. I found my head nodding in agreement with statements, or shaking in shock at a few, but then always back to agreement when someone comes to defend reading's honor. With so many references to great literature, I always feel giddy when I know what books they are talking about and could really delve into their arguments. My plan is to make a list of all the books, read them, and join in their truly thought provoking conversations.
And as Juliet corresponds with these new friends, I find myself, right alongside her, falling in love. Many, many times I have physically smiled or laughed out loud at how real every character is. Their stories, relationships and quirks are heartwarming.
My words are nowhere close to the greatness of the novel. It is lovely, brilliant and sure to be kept on my bookshelf and reread many times. I could not recommend it more.
